Schengen visa in Yerevan in 2026: who can apply from Armenia and where the file goes

You can apply for a Schengen visa in Yerevan, but not in the way the “Schengen from Armenia in a week” adverts promise. Where you may apply does not depend on what is convenient for you; it depends on where you are travelling and where you legally live. Here is how it works, with the rules cited, so that you do not lose the fee and do not collect a refusal you will be explaining for years.

You can get a Schengen visa in Yerevan if you legally reside in Armenia — on a residence permit or work or study registration. The application goes to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most days of the trip. Spain has a visa centre in Yerevan that accepts documents, while Armenia itself falls within the district of the consulate in Moscow. Anyone in Armenia without a status may apply only by way of exception, with a reason.

The rule that decides everything

Two articles of the EU Visa Code determine where your application goes, and there is no way round them.

  • Article 5 — the country of main destination. You apply to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most days. If the days are equal, you apply to the country you enter first. “I will apply where it is easier and travel somewhere else” is a false statement of your itinerary: the application is returned, and in practice it can lead to a refusal or to a visa already issued being annulled.
  • Article 6 — the place of legal residence. You apply to the consulate in whose district you legally reside. Someone who is merely present in a country may apply there only by way of exception — if they explain why they are not applying where they live, and the consulate accepts that explanation.

From these two articles follows the key point for Yerevan: everything depends on your status in Armenia and on the country you are travelling to.

What counts as legal residence in Armenia

A Russian citizen may stay in Armenia for a long time without a visa, and that is often confused with residence. What matters for the Visa Code is a status backed by a document: a residence permit, work or study registration, a status that lets you be in the country as something other than a visitor. Visa-free stay as a tourist is not such a status — with it an application is possible only by way of exception, and the decision rests with the consulate.

The practical conclusion: if you moved to Yerevan properly and hold a card, you apply on ordinary terms. If you flew in for a month “to sort out a visa”, you are asking for an exception, and it may not be granted.

Where Spanish visa applications from Armenia actually go

Spain’s arrangement here is unusual, and that is exactly where people stumble.

There is no Spanish embassy in Yerevan. According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Armenia is covered by the embassy in Moscow; Yerevan has only an honorary consulate, which deals with emergencies rather than visas.

At the same time there is a Spanish visa application centre in Yerevan, run by BLS: it accepts documents and biometrics and forwards them to the consulate. It is located on Pushkin Street, with appointments and document lists on its own site. The centre does not decide anything: the file goes to the Spanish consulate whose district you belong to.

And then there is representation. Article 8 of the Visa Code allows one Schengen state to accept applications and issue visas on behalf of another where the latter has no representation. Under that arrangement, applications for travel to Spain from Armenia have at various times been handled by another Schengen country. Representation arrangements change without notice.

What this means for you: before applying, check on the visa centre’s site and on the Spanish consulate’s page who exactly is accepting your type of visa right now. This is the part that goes out of date fastest, and precisely the part that blogs copy from each other for years.

Schengen or a national visa: two different stories

Schengen, type C National visa, type D
What it is for A trip of up to 90 days in any 180 Moving: residence, study, work, family reunification
Who decides The consulate of the country of main destination, sometimes through representation Only the country’s own consulate; representation does not apply
Where you file from Armenia The visa centre where you legally reside The visa centre; the file goes to the consulate of your district
Processing time 15 calendar days, up to 45 in complex cases Depends on the route, usually weeks to months

If your goal is not a trip but a move, you may not need a Schengen visa at all: a residence permit instead of a Schengen visa is covered separately, and for some routes the application is filed inside Spain without a D visa. The same rule applies to other third countries: how it works in practice is covered in moving to Spain from Serbia.

How to apply for a French visa from Russia — VFS centres, fees and the single-entry rule of 2026 — is covered in the French visa for Russians.

What is asked when you apply from a third country

The pack is the usual one — passport, form, photo, insurance, bookings, proof of funds — but something is added that nobody asks for at home:

  • Proof of your status in Armenia: a residence card, registration, a tenancy agreement, employment or study documents.
  • An explanation of why you are applying here if you have no status: the consulate needs to understand the reason rather than guess it.
  • Ties to where you live: anything showing that you will go back — work, family, obligations, accounts.

On money specifically: the statement has to show a history, not a single top-up made the day before you applied. How to prepare it is in our article on the bank statement for a Spanish visa and residence permit.

Three mistakes that lead to refusals

  1. Applying to the wrong country. People choose a consulate by how fast they can get an appointment rather than by their itinerary. That breaches article 5, and it comes apart at the first question about the route.
  2. Treating visa-free stay as residence. A tourist in Armenia applies by way of exception, and presenting yourself as a resident looks like an attempt to get round the rule.
  3. Assembling a “pack for the visa” rather than for yourself. Bookings that will be cancelled the next day and a statement with a fresh transfer are read together. The consulate does not check papers one by one; it looks at the whole picture.

The digital nomad permit if you live in Armenia

Remote employees and freelancers living in Armenia have two routes. It is worth choosing between them before gathering documents: the choice decides both the length of the first permit and where the file goes.

Through the consulate. The national digital nomad visa is applied for where you legally reside (RD 1155/2024, article 26.1). Spain has no embassy in Yerevan: Armenia belongs to the consular district of Moscow, and the documents are taken by the visa centre in Yerevan and passed on to the consulate. The file includes proof of your status in Armenia — a residence card, a refugee document or a registration. The consulate issues a one-year D visa, and you then apply for the residence permit in Spain.

From within Spain. If you are in Spain lawfully — for example, on a Schengen visa — you can apply straight to the UGE, without a D visa. The permit is issued for three years, the response time is 20 working days, and silence from the authority counts as approval. The NIE is assigned during processing, so you do not need it in advance; municipal registration (empadronamiento) is needed after approval — for the TIE card. Both routes step by step are in our digital nomad visa guide.

An employer in Russia. This works. Russia and Spain have a social security agreement, so you attach an SFR certificate confirming that you stay in the Russian system, with an apostille, and private health insurance for the whole period — the Russian agreement does not cover healthcare. If the employer is registered in Armenia, there is no agreement: the company must register with Spanish Social Security, and a freelancer registers in RETA as autónomo.

If you have a refugee travel document instead of a passport. The Spanish consulate in Moscow lists a valid passport with at least a year left in its requirements for the teleworker visa. Whether a 1951 Convention travel document will be accepted in your case has to be clarified before applying: it decides which route is open at all.

Will your refugee status in Armenia be kept? Moving to another country is not among the grounds for ending refugee status under Armenia’s law on refugees and asylum. But voluntarily re-availing yourself of the protection of your country of citizenship is — obtaining or renewing its passport may be treated that way — and so is acquiring another citizenship. Weigh this before renewing a passport in order to apply. The list of grounds is on the UNHCR Armenia page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Russian citizen get a Schengen visa in Yerevan?

Yes, if you legally reside in Armenia and are travelling to a country whose applications are accepted in Yerevan. A tourist may apply only by way of exception, with an explanation.

Is there a Spanish consulate in Yerevan?

No, only an honorary one. Armenia is covered by the Spanish embassy in Moscow, while Yerevan has a visa centre that accepts documents.

Does an Armenian residence permit give the right to live in Schengen?

No. It gives you the right to apply where you live, and nothing more: the 90/180 rule still applies to Russian citizens.

What is faster — a Schengen visa in Yerevan or Spanish residence straight away?

It depends on the goal. For a trip, the visa. For a move, the Schengen visa is often unnecessary: several routes are filed inside Spain, and spending a month on a type C visa makes no sense. For remote workers the usual route is the digital nomad permit — this is how we handle it.

How long does a decision take?

A short-stay application is processed within 15 calendar days, up to 45 in particular cases. You may apply no earlier than six months before the trip.

The essentials

  • You apply not where it is convenient but to your country of main destination and where you legally reside — articles 5 and 6 of the Visa Code.
  • Visa-free stay in Armenia is not residence: a tourist needs a reason, and the consulate judges it.
  • Spain has only an honorary consulate and a visa centre in Yerevan; Armenia belongs to the embassy in Moscow, and some applications may be handled through representation.
  • Who exactly accepts your type of visa right now is the thing to check before applying: it changes most often.
  • If the goal is a move, a Schengen visa may not be needed at all.
