When I first came to Montanejos, I was immediately won over by the way nature here literally embraces you. The thermal springs are the true gem of the place. The water stays at a comfortable temperature of about 25°C all year round, crystal clear and so soft that you feel as if you are dissolving in it. Bathing in these springs is not just a pleasure; it is a reset for body and soul.
Then there is the Mijares river, along which you can walk for hours, enjoying the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. If you like active holidays, Montanejos offers hiking routes, rocky cliffs to conquer and quiet corners for solitude. Every moment here is a chance to stop, breathe and truly enjoy the moment.
What makes the town and the region unique
Montanejos is not only about nature but also about history. Walking through the narrow streets, you sense the spirit of the past: old houses, small churches and quiet squares where locals gather to chat and share news. Everything here breathes tradition, and people smile as they tell stories about their town.
But what makes Montanejos truly special is its atmosphere. It is a place where you feel part of something bigger, as if nature, people and time live in harmony here. It is easy to forget your problems and worries, because every moment is filled with peace and warmth.

Location
Where Montanejos is
Montanejos is a small, picturesque town in the province of Castellón, in the Valencian Community, Spain. It lies about 90 kilometres north-west of Valencia and 60 kilometres from Castellón de la Plana. We have separate articles on both cities: Valencia and Castellón de la Plana — these are where people most often come from for the weekend. This convenient location makes it a popular destination for day trips and short weekends.
Montanejos sits among the mountains at an altitude of about 400 metres above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests, which give it a special atmosphere of seclusion and calm. The road to Montanejos winds through mountain routes that are part of the adventure in themselves, opening up breathtaking views of the region’s nature.
The region’s landscape and nature
Montanejos is famous for the variety of its natural beauty, which makes it an ideal place for outdoor holidays.
The Mijares river: It winds through the whole region, forming natural lagoons and deep canyons. The river water is crystal clear, and its banks are a real paradise for picnics and walks. The most impressive stretch is the Los Estrechos canyon, where the river passes between high, sheer cliffs.
Arenós lake: A few kilometres from Montanejos there is an artificial lake created by a dam. It attracts fans of water sports such as kayaking and rowing. The lake is surrounded by mountains and forests, creating ideal conditions for enjoying nature. The shores have picnic areas and viewing points with stunning views.
The Sitjar reservoir (Embalse del Sitjar): Another place near the town worth visiting. It is popular with tourists who want to swim, fish or simply enjoy the calm water reflecting the surrounding mountains. The reservoir is also an important source of water for the region.
Caves: One of the natural sights is the Black Cave (Cueva Negra), about 800 metres from the town on the road to Puebla de Arenoso. The cave is striking for its entrance — a large opening in the rock measuring 26 by 10 metres. Inside you can go about 150 metres deep, where the walls and ceiling are characteristically black from the soot of fires lit here since prehistoric times.
The landscape of Montanejos is an amazing combination of mountains, rivers, lakes and caves. You will find places both for active holidays and for complete relaxation. The region’s nature will leave no one indifferent: whether it is admiration for the power of the canyons, the calm by the reservoir or the mysterious atmosphere of the caves. Montanejos is a real paradise for those seeking inspiration and harmony surrounded by nature.

History
A brief history of the town
Montanejos is a place whose history is closely tied to its natural riches. The first mentions of the settlement date back to the period of Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula (8th–13th centuries). It was then that the locals began using the thermal springs, believing in their healing properties. The town’s name comes from an Arabic word that can be translated as “mountain of springs” or “place among the mountains”.
After the Reconquista, Montanejos became part of the Christian Kingdom of Valencia. In this period it became a strategically important point protecting the territory from outside threats. Traces of old fortifications have survived to this day, recalling the town’s medieval history.
Significant historical events and legends
One of the key events in the history of Montanejos was the development of the thermal spa in the 19th century. At that time the springs attracted the attention of doctors and researchers, who began recommending them for treating skin conditions and other illnesses. Gradually the town became a popular destination among the aristocracy and wealthy people seeking to improve their health.
There is also a local legend about Montanejos that residents often tell. According to tradition, in ancient times one of the Moorish rulers, struck by the beauty of the place, built a bathhouse here for his daughter. It is said that the thermal water restored the girl’s health and beauty, and ever since the springs have been a symbol of renewal and longevity.
Natural attractions
The Montanejos thermal springs
The main natural gem of Montanejos is its thermal springs, which have made the town famous far beyond the province of Castellón. The springs lie along the Mijares river and offer a unique combination of crystal-clear water and a stable temperature of about +25°C all year round.
The waters are rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium and are considered beneficial for the skin, joints and general wellbeing. Locals and tourists say that bathing here relieves stress, improves circulation and gives a boost of energy. Visiting the springs is especially pleasant in winter, when the contrast between the cool air and the warm water creates a special sensation.
One of the most popular spots is the natural pool called “Fuente de Baños”, where the water is incredibly clear and there are stunning views of the mountains. Here you can not only enjoy a swim but also feel completely at one with nature.
The Mijares river and its canyons
The Mijares river is another amazing place in Montanejos that is well worth visiting. It winds among the rocks and forms deep canyons with breathtaking sheer walls. The river water is so clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom.
A walk along the river is a chance to admire lagoons, small waterfalls and natural bridges created by nature itself. The route along the Los Estrechos canyon is particularly popular: the river passes between high cliffs, creating a stunning landscape. The spot is ideal for picnics, swimming and photo shoots.
Cultural attractions
Architectural monuments
Montanejos is not only natural beauty but also a town with a rich historical heritage reflected in its architecture. One of the main monuments is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles), built in the 18th century. With its elegant façade and simple yet cosy interior, this church is an important symbol of the town’s faith and culture. It houses old icons, and its atmosphere seems to transport visitors into the past.
Another significant place is the old Stone Bridge over the Mijares river, built in the Middle Ages. The bridge not only serves as a transport link but is also a symbol of the engineering skill of the time. Walking across it, you can imagine how locals and travellers crossed the river hundreds of years ago.
The town’s narrow streets with traditional stone houses create an old-world atmosphere. These houses, many of which have kept their original architecture, are an important part of the cultural heritage of Montanejos.
Local museums and cultural centres
Montanejos has no large museums, but there are small cultural centres and exhibitions devoted to local traditions and history. For example, one of the historic buildings hosts displays on the role of the thermal springs in the life of the town and on the region’s development through the ages.
Temporary exhibitions on crafts, art and agriculture are also held. Here you can learn how locals worked the land for centuries, produced olive oil and preserved their traditions.
Festivals and traditional events
The Montanejos calendar is full of colourful events that attract both locals and tourists. One of the most important is the Fiesta of Saint Agatha (Fiesta de Santa Águeda), the town’s patron saint. It takes place in early February and includes religious processions, popular festivities, music and food fairs.
In summer the town comes alive with the Water Festival (Fiesta del Agua), which celebrates the richness and importance of the thermal springs. It features fun games, street concerts and workshops. In addition, in autumn the people of Montanejos celebrate Harvest Day, when you can try local dishes and learn more about traditional crafts.

How to get there
Transport options
By car
A car is the most convenient way to get to Montanejos, especially if you want to explore the area. From Valencia the drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes via the A-23 towards Segorbe and then mountain roads into the Mijares valley; from Castellón de la Plana it takes about 1 hour via the CV-10 towards Onda and then the CV-20.
By public transport
There is no direct bus from Valencia or Castellón de la Plana to Montanejos, so the trip takes a change and some planning:
- From Valencia: take a train (Renfe Cercanías line C5 or a regional train towards Teruel) or a bus to Segorbe, about 1–1.5 hours. From Segorbe a Monbus bus runs to Montanejos only about twice a day (around 50 minutes); a taxi from Segorbe covers the 35 km in roughly 40 minutes.
- From Castellón de la Plana: a bus to Onda, then a local bus to Montanejos, which does not run every day. The whole trip with the change takes several hours, so a car or a taxi from Onda is far more practical.
- Onward to Madrid: there is no direct connection. Return to Valencia the same way and take a high-speed train to Madrid — about 2 hours, with several trains a day from Renfe AVE, Iryo and Ouigo.
Rural timetables change by season and are thinner at weekends and outside the summer. Check the current times a few days before you travel on Monbus (Segorbe–Montanejos), Renfe Cercanías Valencia (line C5) and Autobuses Furió (Castellón–Onda).
Tips for travellers
If you plan to travel by public transport, it is best to check bus and train timetables in advance, especially at weekends, when services may be less frequent.
For those who like freedom of movement, hiring a car is the ideal option, allowing you not only to reach Montanejos conveniently but also to visit other sights in the region.
Remember that the last stretch of the journey goes through the mountains, so be prepared for winding roads. But the views along the way are worth every minute!
Getting to Montanejos is easy, and the journey itself becomes part of the adventure, filling the trip with vivid impressions and anticipation of meeting the natural beauty of this unique corner of Spain.
