An employee of a Spanish company was made redundant, and her highly qualified worker permit had only months left to run. Instead of looking for another job she moved to cuenta propia — the permit for working for yourself. The decisive document turned out to be the business plan: on paper alone it is not visible why someone leaves a company for self-employment.
- about 2 weeks
- to prepare the business plan
- as the client recalls it; she notes she may be wrong on exact dates
- about a month
- to the decision
- the Easter holidays fell inside the period
- 4 years
- the new permit’s term
- instead of the few months left on the old one
- 1 applicant
- no family members
- a change of status, not an initial application
What they came with
She arrived in Spain on the digital nomad permit, spent a year on it, then joined a local company and moved to a highly qualified worker permit — in the EU Blue Card modality (tarjeta azul-UE).
A year later the company ran into difficulties and carried out large-scale redundancies. She was among them. That was the vulnerability: the Blue Card is issued for work with a specific employer, and once the job goes the basis for the status goes with it. There was not much time to decide.
She registered with the employment service and tried to find work, but quickly realised it would take a while. More than the right to remain was at stake: the continuous period of residence needed for long-term residence would also be broken. That is when the decision came — not to look for another employer but to work for herself.
How the timeline ran
-
01
First contact
Immediately after the redundancy. We reviewed the situation and chose the move to working for oneself over looking for another employer.
-
02
Business plan
About two weeks. From the applicant: answers to a long list of questions and clarifications on the professional side.
-
03
Business organisation report
About a week after the plan was ready.
-
04
Remaining documents and the padrón
In parallel. The padrón was registered where it is done quickly.
-
05
Filing
About a month after the work began.
-
06
Decision
About a month. The Easter holidays fell inside the period; approval arrived late in the evening.
-
07
Fingerprints
The next step after approval — fingerprints and collecting the card.
What did not go to plan
Кейс прошёл не гладко. Ниже — то, что реально задержало или усложнило процесс, и что с этим делали.
There was little time after the redundancy
The previous permit was tied to the employer, and there was no room to think it over.
The risk was not only the right to remain. The continuous period of residence needed for long-term residence would have been broken — and more than two years of it had been accumulated. Losing that would have cost more than the status itself.
The padrón could not be arranged quickly where she lived
The file is tied to the province of the address stated, and in her own town the padrón was slow to obtain.
She found a way to register elsewhere and filed from there. A workable solution, but it requires knowing in advance how the queue works at a specific town hall — the rules differ everywhere.
The move looked atypical
The main worry was not the documents but the reading of them: someone worked at a Spanish company, was made redundant — and instead of looking for another job asks for permission to work for herself.
That logic does not read from the documents themselves. The business plan closed the gap: it set out exactly what she would be doing and with whom.
The holidays moved the decision
The Easter break fell inside the review period and the authority worked more slowly than usual. According to an official she spoke to, someone was also going on leave.
There was nothing to be done about it. This is precisely the part of the timeline that does not depend on the provider, and it has to be allowed for in advance.
What the costs were made of
| Item | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Business plan preparation | by agreement | to us; in this file a standalone service, not a package |
| Application fee | at the current rate | to the state |
| Residence card fee | at the current rate | to the state |
| Business organisation report | at that body’s rate | to a third party |
There are deliberately no figures in this case: it is built from an interview with the client rather than from the file, and no verifiable numbers were mentioned in it. The client notes that she chose a standalone service over a package and that it worked out roughly half the price — but that is her assessment, not our price list.
What we did
- Reviewed the situation and proposed moving to self-employment rather than finding a new employer
- Collected the source material through a structured list of questions
- Prepared the business plan: activity, clients, investment, economics
- Brought the future clients’ confirmations into the plan
- Supported the process of obtaining the business organisation report
- Advised on the padrón and the choice of where to file
What the service did not cover
This was not a turnkey package. The applicant had already been through document processes in Spain twice and came to us for one task — the business plan. She handled the rest of the documents, the padrón and the filing herself, with our advice along the way.
We work this way deliberately: if someone needs one part, there is no reason to push the rest. But responsibility divides too — the filing date and the completeness of the other documents are the applicant’s.
The business organisation report is paid separately at that body’s rate.
This case was assembled differently from the others: not from the working correspondence but from an interview with the client after approval. All the timings here are therefore her recollection, and she says herself that she may be wrong on dates. There are no figures: none were mentioned in the conversation, and we did not substitute our own.
We do not promise timelines and we do not influence them. Part of the period here was eaten by the Easter holidays, and that is a normal part of working with government bodies.
And the main point. A business plan works when there is real activity behind it: real clients, real plans, verifiable data. The regulation expressly provides for refusal where false documents are submitted in support. We write the plan from what exists, and if there is no activity behind it we say so before signing.
Questions we had to answer
What is a modification, and how does it differ from a new application?
It is a change of basis for someone already living in the country lawfully. A whole part of the regulation is devoted to transitions between statuses — including from a highly qualified worker permit to a permit to work for yourself.
The practical difference from a new application is that you do not leave and you do not restart your residence clock. That was the point here: continuity of residence is what long-term residence is built on.
Is a business plan required for cuenta propia?
The regulation’s list of requirements does not name a business plan as such. But it does require evidence that the investment planned for the project is sufficient and of its effect on employment — «including self-employment» — as well as professional qualification or documented experience in the activity. A business plan is how all of that is evidenced.
In an atypical situation it does a second job. From the documents alone the logic of the move is invisible: the person worked at a Spanish company and is suddenly going out on their own. The plan explains it. In the client’s own assessment, without it there would have been no approval.
What is asked of the applicant while the plan is prepared?
Answering a long list of questions and then clarifying details about the professional side. You do not have to build the financial model yourself — that is the provider’s work.
What matters more is that the data are real. Who you are actually going to work with, what you are actually going to do. The regulation expressly provides for refusal where false documents or inaccurate statements are submitted in support.
What strengthens an application of this kind?
Evidence that working for yourself is not a statement of intent. In this file the plan was accompanied by references and letters of intent from future clients.
This is exactly the place where an application either looks real or does not: the authority is assessing whether there is genuine activity behind the project.
What does the padrón have to do with it?
The file is tied to the province of the address you state. Registering on the padrón takes anywhere from a day to several months depending on the municipality — a walk-in in one place, a two-month wait in another.
In this file the applicant deliberately filed somewhere other than where she lived: in her own town the padrón was slow, and she found a faster option elsewhere. That is lawful, but the manoeuvre has to be planned in advance.
How long is the permit granted for on a modification?
In this file approval came for four years. The term depends on the basis and on whether this is an initial or a subsequent permit — check it against your own situation rather than someone else’s case.
